Ly Thai To Garden, a famous public space in Hanoi.
Hoan Kiem District has announced the detailed plan to renovate Ly Thai To Garden and install the Km0 marker, located next to the pedestrian zone around Hoan Kiem Lake.
According to the Hoan Kiem District People's Committee, Ly Thai To Garden is situated in Trang Tien Ward, covering an area of 10,040 square meters. It is bordered by Dinh Tien Hoang, Le Thach, Le Lai, and Ngo Quyen streets.
The park plays a key role in connecting Hoan Kiem Lake with nearby areas, including the Dien Hong Garden, the square in front of the State Bank of Vietnam, and important architectural landmarks such as the Presidential Office, the headquarter complex of the Hanoi Party Committee, the Hanoi People's Council and the Hanoi People's Committee, and the Metropole Hotel.
After more than 20 years of use, the park's trees, grass lawns, and walkways have deteriorated and need renovation to improve both functionality and aesthetics.
In line with the city's urban development programs, including Program 03-CTr/TU of the Hanoi Party Committee (March 17, 2021) on urban renovation and development and socio-economic growth in Hanoi during 2021-2025, Plan 332/KH-UBND (December 31, 2021) of the Hanoi People's Committee on upgrading and building new parks and gardens, and Program 04-CTr/QU (August 6, 2021) of the Hoan Kiem District Party Committee on the district's urban renovation and development, the district has completed preparations for the renovation project to prevent further deterioration, upgrade urban facilities, and enhance the historical and cultural value of the Hoan Kiem Lake area.
The redesigned garden will have three main sections: the Ceremonial Area, the Bandstand Area, and the Public Garden Space.
The Ceremonial Area will include a main entrance, a ceremonial square, and a tribute plaza. The ceremonial square will be expanded towards the sidewalk of Dinh Tien Hoang Street, with the Km0 marker placed at its center.
The Bandstand Area will have reorganized greenery and lawns, increasing usable space around the bandstand.
The Public Garden Space will feature two main axes: one connecting the bandstand with the State Bank of Vietnam and the other linking the Presidential Office with the Children's Palace.
Its central courtyard will be expanded for public activities. A musical fountain system will be installed along the east-west axis, and a new public restroom and a tourist information center will also be added.
Hoan Kiem District will expand the garden's connections with Le Lai, Le Thach, and Dinh Tien Hoang streets. The garden paths and the road surfaces of Le Lai and Le Thach streets will be paved with stone, while Dinh Tien Hoang Street will have painted markings and partial stone paving to integrate the park more closely with Hoan Kiem Lake.
The trees in the garden will be adjusted by removing unsuitable ones and planting more shade trees to improve the landscape. A new lighting system and upgraded urban furniture will be installed to match the garden's new functions.
The Km0 marker will be placed at the center of the ceremonial square. It will be designed by the winning team of the Km0 Landmark Design Competition, organized by the Vietnam Association of Architects and the Hoan Kiem District People's Committee in 2020.
According to the Hoan Kiem District People's Committee, construction will begin in April 2025 and be completed by October 2025.
