With urbanization and climate change, challenges such as environmental pollution, air and water contamination, increasing household waste, and declining green spaces have become pressing issues in major cities. These challenges demand immediate and practical actions from both authorities and every resident to protect the environment.
Recognizing this responsibility, on December 10, 2024, the People's Committee issued Plan No. 359/KH-UBND to implement the "Bright - Green - Clean - Beautiful" emulation campaign citywide. This initiative seeks to address environmental pollution while building a civilized and modern Hanoi.
Chairman Tran Sy Thanh called on residents to actively participate in the campaign, encouraging habits like waste sorting at the source. He urged families and neighborhoods to collect, sort, and reduce household waste as part of their daily routines. This, he stated, is not only an action for the environment but also an important lesson on responsibility for future generations.

To protect water sources, air quality, and the living environment, Chairman Thanh urged residents to conserve water, reduce toxic emissions, and protect green spaces. He noted that today's clean environment is the key to health and happiness for current and future generations.
Highlighting the importance of green spaces, Chairman Thanh stressed that every tree planted and every clean, beautiful street contributes to making Hanoi greener, cleaner, and more beautiful. He encouraged residents to regularly plant trees and clean their surroundings as an essential part of daily life.
Chairman Thanh underscored the collective effort of the community in preserving a "Bright - Green - Clean - Beautiful" Hanoi, reflecting its spirit of unity, heroism, and the elegant culture of Trang An residents. He noted that small actions, like keeping public spaces clean, protecting green areas, and reducing plastic use, have a significant impact on the environment.
"When these habits become part of our lifestyle and culture, we will build a cleaner, more civilized, and sustainable Hanoi together," said Thanh.
The city government, he added, will focus on implementing the campaign with innovative, practical, and effective approaches, mobilizing the entire political system from the municipal to grassroots levels.
He said that this is an ongoing effort, not limited to peak periods, with the ultimate goal of making Hanoi clean and beautiful every day. He called on urban districts to increase waste collection frequency to ensure a consistently clean city, stating, "Hanoi may not yet be wealthy, but it must be elegant and clean. Even if buildings are old, they must be clean – this is the foundation of the campaign."

"This campaign is continuous, with no fixed endpoint, requiring full participation from the government, residents, and organizations across urban and rural areas. With Hanoi's population of 10 million, he stressed that success depends on the collective effort of every citizen and all levels of government," said Thanh.
Chairman Thanh urged individuals, organizations, and businesses to join hands to build Hanoi into a livable, sustainable city that leads the nation into a new era of growth and development.
Responding to the call, Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Le Thanh Nam described the initiative as a meaningful step toward transforming Hanoi into a symbol of sustainable and nature-friendly development.
Acknowledging the city's environmental challenges—air pollution, water degradation, and urban waste—Le Thanh Nam stressed the need for decisive and coordinated action.
The Department will focus on three key priorities: Scientific solutions and professional actions: Implement projects for waste management at the source, develop advanced waste collection and processing systems, and focus on air, water, and soil quality improvements. A key focus will be the "Reviving Hanoi's Lakes and Rivers" campaign, aimed at cleaning, restoring, and creating green public spaces around lakes and rivers; Community engagement in environmental protection: Programs like "Green Weekends," "Clean Rivers and Lakes Day," and "Protect the City's Lungs" will be expanded, along with campaigns for clean, green neighborhoods to inspire widespread participation; and Strict enforcement and sustainable improvements: The Department will enhance supervision, strictly enforce environmental regulations, and penalize violations to ensure accountability and progress.
"We are committed to working with utmost responsibility, continuously improving and innovating, to make Hanoi a city we can all be proud of," said Nam.
Echoing this commitment, Chairman of the Hoan Kiem District People's Committee Pham Tuan Long pledged to implement specific activities, such as promoting environmental awareness, ensuring each agency becomes a "Bright - Green - Clean - Beautiful" model, and encouraging practical actions like planting trees, reducing waste, limiting private vehicle use, and adopting green transportation.
He expressed confidence that, with the determination of the entire political system, efforts from all levels of government, changes in public awareness, and support from businesses and international organizations, Hanoi will successfully improve air quality and become an ideal destination for both domestic and international visitors.
Following the ceremony, delegates visited exhibition areas showcasing recycling models, environmental sanitation efforts, and interactive activities like waste sorting challenges and upcycling experiences. Attendees also signed a large community pledge to protect the environment.
With strong determination and concrete actions, Hanoi aims to create a breakthrough in environmental protection, effectively control pollution, and foster a sustainable "Bright - Green - Clean - Beautiful" capital city.
